Mark Johnson and Jeff Sauer's paths have crossed many times through the years, but rarely in as meaningful a setting as Wednesday night, when each was presented with the Lester Patrick Award in St. Paul, Minn.

The honor, presented by the NHL, recognizes contributions to the sport in the United States. Bob Pulford and Tony Rossi were also honored Wednesday night.

Johnson's father, "Badger" Bob, once won the award, and Sauer was working on Bob's staff when Mark was born.

Years later, after his playing career at Wisconsin, representing the U.S. in the Olympics and playing in the NHL, Mark was an assistant coach on Sauer's staff. Sauer led the Badgers to two national championships, while Johnson has now led the Wisconsin women's team to four titles.

Mike Lucas takes a great look at the two from the Wisconsin perspective, while NHL.com also offers looks at the careers of Sauer and Johnson.
