Collegians Prep for NHL Draft
More than 60 current or future college hockey players figure to be selected during the 2012 NHL Draft this Friday and Saturday at Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center. The NHL Central Scouting rankings for 2012 feature 88 players currently in college or committed to a school and another seven who have yet to choose a college.
At least 60 college players have been selected each year since the seven-round draft was introduced in 2005.
Fans can watch the draft starting at 7 p.m. ET on Friday (NBC Sports Network/TSN) and 10 a.m. ET on Saturday (NHL Network).
Wide Representation
Last year, 27 of the 30 NHL teams took at least one college player in the draft. Twenty-four colleges were represented among the selections, with three players yet to decide on a school.
Most draft experts expect five or six players with college ties to be taken in Friday night’s first round.
Michigan could be featured prominently on Friday night. Phil Di Giuseppe, a current Wolverine, could be taken in the first round along with incoming freshmen Jacob Trouba and Crisoval “Boo” Nieves. Other first-round candidates include Zemgus Girgensons (Vermont), Brady Skjei (Minnesota), Nick Kerdiles (Wisconsin), Mark Matheson (Boston College) and Mark Jankowski (Providence).
