Shayne Gostisbehere was a third-round pick of Philadelphia in June’s NHL Draft.

USA Hockey narrowed its roster at the 2012 U.S. National Junior Evaluation Camp to 34 players Tuesday, a group that includes 22 collegians representing 15 schools. The remaining players will face teams from Finland and Sweden this week in Lake Placid, N.Y.

The players are auditioning for a spot on the U.S. National Junior Team that will take part in the 2013 World Junio Championship, Dec. 26 to Jan. 5 in Ufa, Russia.

“The first three days of camp have been impressive and we have been pleased with the players’ level of competition,” said Jim Johansson, USA Hockey’s assistant executive director of hockey operations and the general manager of the 2013 U.S. National Junior Team. “The players being released today are still among those being evaluated for the team in the coming months. For the players retained, this week’s upcoming international games in Lake Placid give us an opportunity to further assess their skills.”

Minnesota and Notre Dame each have three representatives among the remaining 34 players, while Harvard, Miami and Wisconsin are represented by two players each.

Nine of the players remaining in camp played college hockey in 2011-12, led by NCAA champion John Gaudreau (Boston College) and Frozen Four participants Shayne Gostisbehere (Union) and Travis Boyd (Minnesota).

U.S. Hockey Hall of Famer Phil Housley has been named head coach of the 2012 National Junior Team. He will be assisted by two current college coaches: Ohio State head coach Mark Osiecki and Minnesota assistant coach Grant Potulny.
