Irish Claim Ice Breaker

Irish Claim Ice Breaker
College Hockey, Inc. Executive Director Mike Snee presents the Ice Breaker Tournament trophy to Notre Dame captain Anders Lee.

Notre Dame won a second one-goal game in as many days to capture the 2012 Ice Breaker Tournament championship with a 3-2 victory against Nebraska-Omaha at Kansas City’s Sprint Center.

It’s the first Ice Breaker championship in three appearances in the season-opening event for the Irish. Junior T.J. Tynan, who had an assist in the title game, earned tournament MVP honors, while all-tournament goaltender Steven Summerhays stopped 28 shots for his second consecutive win.

“This was a good weekend for us,” head coach Jeff Jackson said afterwards. “We faced two very good teams, won a couple of one-goal games, and it’s good to face those tests early in the season.”

Notre Dame jumped to an early lead 1:14 into the first period when Peter Schneider scored the first goal of his collegiate career, putting home a strange rebound off the back boards from an Anders Lee shot.

Lee added a goal of his own in the first period and another first-time scorer – Thomas DiPauli – scored the other Notre Dame goal.

Two defensemen skating on UNO’s first pairing accounted for the Mavericks’ two goals, as Michael Young and Andrej Sustr each scored.

Maine – which lost to Notre Dame in the semifinals – posted its first win of the season in the third-place game, holding off Army, 4-3.
