UConn commit Miles Gendron and the Penticton Vees begin their pursuit of the RBC Cup on Saturday.

Nearly 30 players who have committed to Division I colleges are on the five teams headed to Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, this weekend to compete for the RBC Cup given to Canada’s Junior A national champion.

The Carleton Place Canadians (CCHL), Melfort Mustangs (SJHL), Penticton Vees (BCHL), Portage Terriers (MJHL) and Soo Thunderbirds (NOJHL) drop the puck Saturday, May 9, in the week-long competition.

Penticton leads the five teams with 16 players already committed to NCAA Division I programs, followed by Carleton Place (9), Portage (2) and Soo (2). Melfort is the one team of the five that does not have a Division I commit at this point.

Twenty-three schools have commits in the field. Bentley, Colgate, Ferris State, Michigan Tech, Minnesota Duluth and Vermont lead all schools with two committed recruits each.

This is the 45th season of Canada’s Junior A championship, crowning the best of the 129 teams that compete in the 10 leagues that form the CJHL. The Yorkton Terriers claimed the championship last season.
