23 Alums Earn AHL All-Star Invites
St. Cloud State alum Charlie Lindgren has starred as a rookie for the St. John’s Ice Caps.

Nearly half of the players named to the 2017 AHL All-Star Classic played college hockey, with 23 NCAA alums named to the rosters announced by the league on Thursday.

The players will represent each of the four AHL divisions in the two-day event, which features a skills competition on Jan. 29 and the AHL All-Star Challenge on Jan. 30. All events will take place at the PPL Center in Allentown, Pa.

AHL Announcement

Eighteen schools have former players selected to the event. Boston University boasts three representatives, while Miami, Providence and St. Cloud State have two each.

Eight of the players selected played NCAA hockey in 2015-16.

College players have enjoyed tremendous success in the AHL, the NHL’s top development league, this season. As of the end of last week former college players led the league in goals, assists, points, plus/minus, shots, shorthanded goals, power-play goals, save percentage, goals-against average, shutouts and wins.
