Paul Washe (Tri-City), a Western Michigan commit, scored twice to earn Team West MVP honors, while goaltender Keith Petruzzelli (Muskegon), a Quinnipiac commit, was named Team East MVP after stopping all 21 shots he faced. West goaltenders Cayden Primeau (Lincoln/Northeastern) and Dayton Rasmussen (Tri-City/Denver) combined for the shutout, the first in the game’s history.
Team West jumped out to a 2-0 lead through 20 minutes of play. Nick Swaney (Waterloo/Minnesota Duluth) found the back of the net with a beautiful shot over the shoulder of Maksim Zhukov (Green Bay) to open the scoring 4:06 into the game. Just 1:17 later, a John St. Ivany (Sioux Falls/Yale) shot deflected off the stick of Washe in front of the net to double Team West’s advantage. Greg Printz (Omaha/Providence) picked up the secondary assist on Washe’s tally.
Washe then scored his second of the night 7:50 in the middle frame, stretching the lead to 3-0 courtesy of helpers from Mario Ferraro (Des Moines/Massachusetts) and Matt Quercia (Sioux Falls/Boston University). Quercia added his second point of the game, an empty net goal with 1:54 remaining in the game, to give Team West a 4-0 advantage and complete the scoring.
The two teams – divided roughly on conference lines – were coached by Dan Muse (East) and Jay Varady (West). Muse is a former Yale assistant coach who played at Stonehille College; Varady played at Union.
The selection process for players competing in the game was completed in cooperation with NHL general managers and scouts, NHL Central Scouting and USHL general managers.
