Twenty-three current college players will be among those contending for spots on the 2020 U.S. National Junior Team, USA Hockey announced Monday.

The 23 NCAA players are among 28 players named to the U.S. preliminary roster. They will report to Plymouth, Mich., for training camp next week at USA Hockey Arena. The final 23-player roster is expected to be named Dec. 24 and will compete in the 2020 World Junior Championship, Dec. 26 to Jan. 5 in the Czech Republic.

Seventeen schools had a player or alumnus named to the preliminary roster. Wisconsin (four), Notre Dame (three), Boston University (two) and Michigan (two) each had multiple representatives selected.

Four players on the preliminary roster were members of the silver medal-winning team a year ago: Jack Drury (Harvard), Spencer Knight (Boston College), K’Andre Miller (Wisconsin) and Mattias Samuelsson (Western Michigan).

Minnesota Duluth head coach Scott Sandelin is the head coach of the 2020 U.S. National Junior Team. His assistants all coach NCAA hockey as well: David Lassonde (Dartmouth), Steve Miller (Ohio State), Brett Larson (St. Cloud State) and Jerry Keefe (Northeastern). USA Hockey assistant executive director of hockey operations John Vanbiesbrouck is the general manager of the U.S. team.

Seven other NCAA players or recruits have been named to preliminary rosters for other World Junior Championship teams:

  • Canada: Jacob Bernard-Docker (North Dakota), Peter DiLiberatore (Quinnipiac), Dylan Holloway (Wisconsin), Alex Newhook (Boston College)
  • Czech Republic: Ondrej Pavel (Minnesota State recruit)
  • Finland: Sampo Ranta (Minnesota)
  • Sweden: Erik Portillo (Michigan recruit)
