USA's Lane Chooses BU

Matthew Lane helped lead the U.S. to the gold medal at the Four Nations Cup last week.

Matthew Lane's combination of hockey skill and good grades earned him plenty of attention from college recruiters. Once the Rochester, N.Y., native who plays for USA Hockey's National Team Development Program paid a visit to Boston University, he found it easy to narrow down those options.

"I was undecided for a while," the 5-foot-9, 170-pound Lane said. "I went on a visit to BU and fell in love with the campus. I knew right away that was where I wanted to be."

Lane also had the option of playing in the OHL, where he was a fifth-round selection of the Brampton Battalion - where his brother, Philip, plays.

"I played in Canada the year before I came here," he said from Ann Arbor, "and my brother plays in the OHL. I definitely didn't count it out, but I kind of knew that college hockey was the right choice for me. We are different people, maybe I did a little better in school. College felt like the right choice."

The speedy, skilled Lane brings intensity and a scoring touch to the rink. He had two goals and one assist in three games last week as the U.S. captured the Four Nations Cup in Switzerland and is eligible for the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
