Backcheck: Matt Greene

Greene has played more than 400 NHL games since leaving North Dakota.

Matt Greene wasn't the biggest name on North Dakota teams that featured the likes of Zach Parise and Drew Stafford, but like those two, the Los Angeles Kings defenseman has made a name for himself in the NHL.

In fact, like his former Fighting Sioux teammates, Greene now wears a letter for his NHL team as the Kings' assistant captain. The seventh-year pro has played more than 400 games with the Kings and Edmonton Oilers.

Greene is among the leaders on a Kings blueline that is nearly all college educated. Davis Drewiske (Wisconsin), Jack Johnson (Michigan), Alec Martinez (Miami), Willie Mitchell (Clarkson) and Rob Scuderi (Boston College) also hold down spots on L.A.'s defense.

College Hockey, Inc. caught up with Greene earlier this week as the Kings prepared to face the Boston Bruins.
