Collegians Highlight Junior Roster

Fifteen current and future college hockey players are among the 22 selections to the 2012 U.S. National Junior Team, USA Hockey announced Thursday.

Returnees Jason Zucker (Denver), Derek Forbort (North Dakota), Jon Merrill (Michigan), Nick Bjugstad (Minnesota) and Charlie Coyle (formerly of Boston University) highlight the selections. They are joined by nine current freshmen or sophomores and one recruit, Jacob Trouba, who has committed to Michigan.

In addition, the U.S. named Cornell goaltender Andy Iles as its emergency goaltender of one of the selected netminders is injured. Iles will be available to the Big Red in the meantime.

Boston University, Michigan, Minnesota and Notre Dame each have a pair of representatives on the team, with 11 colleges represented in all.

The team will compete in the 2012 World Junior Championship in Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta, which begins Dec. 26. Selections were made following a pre-tournament camp in Camrose, Alberta, by USA Hockey staff and the coaches. The coaching staff is led by Nebraska-Omaha head coach Dean Blais and includes assistant coaches Scott Sandelin (Minnesota Duluth), Tom Ward (Shattuck St. Mary's) and Joe Exter (Ohio State assistant coach).
