Women’s Notes: Non-Conference Competition Ramps Up

Split Decision for Top 15 Ranked Matchup, Penn State at UConn

Women’s Notes: Non-Conference Competition Ramps Up
Tessa Janecke led Penn State in its first win over UConn.

The weekend was filled with non-conference matchups, as the No. 9-ranked UConn Huskies split against the No. 12 Penn State Nittany Lions.

The UConn Huskies completed a third-period comeback to win the first game at home 3-2. Three different players scored for the Huskies in the comeback victory.

Senior forward Brianna Ware (Pointe-Claire, Quebec) started the comeback on the power play early in the third period. Freshman Claire Murdoch (Toronto, Ontario) tallied her first goal of the season to tie the game, while junior Brooke Campbell (Essex, Ontario) sealed the win, netting her first of the season with three minutes left in the game.

However, on Saturday, Penn State secured its first-ever win over UConn in program history. The Nittany Lions’ special teams led the way to a 4-2 victory with a shorthanded goal, two power-play goals, and four successful penalty kills.

Junior forward Tessa Janecke (Orangeville, Ill.) opened the scoring for Penn State with a shorthanded goal, the sixth of her career, and later added an assist. Penn State’s goalie, Katie DeSa (Jr., Pawcatuck, Conn.), made 27 saves while playing in her home state.

Other non-conference matchups that resulted in weekend splits included Minnesota Duluth at Colgate, Quinnipiac at Northeastern, and RIT at Union. For final scores and upcoming games, check out the composite schedule.

Breaking Barriers:

Cornell women’s hockey alumna Jessica Campbell (2010-14) is the first woman to be a full-time assistant coach in the NHL. Campbell was named assistant coach on July 3 and coached her first regular-season game in the Kraken’s home opener against the Blues on Tuesday afternoon.

Campbell was a standout at Cornell before playing three seasons with the Calgary Inferno of the CWHL. Her international accolades include winning gold with the Canadian women’s team at the 2010 IIHF World U18 Championship and the 2014 4 Nations Cup, as well as silver at the 2009 World U18 Championship and the 2015 World Championship and 4 Nations Cup.

She may be breaking barriers as the first female assistant coach in the NHL, but to her players, she’s simply Coach Campbell.

“I think she’s just another coach, someone who worked really hard to get to where they were. Guys in Coachella all raved about her and said she was awesome; their power play was really good. They all had great things to say about her and I’m sure the organization and people hiring her went through the process and saw her qualifications. She’s lived up to those expectations so far and when you come to the rink, she’s just another coach.” – Kraken Forward Matty Beniers
